22 April 2018
As of April 19 farmers planted corn throughout 244k ha or 5% of total planned area according to Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
Taking into account delay with early spring crops sowing campaign in Ukraine (due to unfavorable weather conditions in the end of March) along with relatively favorable market conditions (significant growth of corn prices in February-March), we can expect increase of corn sown area from 4.5M ha a year ago up to 4.7M ha.
If corn yields will increase from last year’s 5.5t/ha up to average for the last five years 6,1t/ha, total harvest can be expected at about 28.5M tons.
Apart from corn as of the reporting date planted early spring grains throughout 1.8M ha (74% of plan), including spring wheat at 101k ha, spring barley — 1.2M ha (75% of plan, we can expect that final sown area under barley will be below expectations, which can result in lower than expected barley). As of April 19 sown area under sugar beet comprised 173k ha (57% of plan), sunflower seed — 617k ha (11%).
