6 October 2017
In September 2017 total Ukrainian steel output made 1.935M tons, which has been just slightly higher vs. previous month and by 4% higher than in September 2016.
We specially note y-o-y growth of output, as unlike previous year’s figure current one does not take into account steel production at two mills situated at the non-controlled by Ukrainian government Donbass territory – Alchevsk and Enakievo mills. Disregarding output of these two mills y-o-y production growth in September made 17%.
Average daily steel output dynamics during last period of time is represented on the chart below:
By our estimations (official data is still pending), main factors of Ukrainian steel output increase in September are grows of production at DMK (after re-launch of the mill in the end of July, in August it already produced 179k tons of pig iron and 183k tons of steel, in September – 219k tons of pig iron and 225k tons of steel) and Metinvest mills situated in Mariupol.
We note as well that after finishing of maintenance works at one of blast furnaces at Zaporizhstal (in the end of July) the company significantly improved its operating performance as well (in September Zaporizhstal produced 351k tons of crude steel).
As for total January-September 2017 output, it made close to 15.7M tons, which is by 13.6% lower y-o-y (disregarding production of enterprises situated at non-controlled by Ukrainian government territory of Donbass Ukrainian output declined by just 3%, mainly due to standstill of DMK during April-July).
Steel pipes production dynamics remains rather good – in September pipes output has been slightly below local highs of June and July, but by 13% higher y-o-y (at 93k tons). For the whole period of 9m 2017 steel pipes production made 784k tons, by 26% more than in corresponding period of Y2016. Output dynamics during last period of time looked as follows:
