Ukrainian grains export digest – March 2017

Total Ukrainian grains export in March 2017 made slightly lower than 4.4M tons, which is one of the highest monthly values since the beginning of current season.

Grains export in last reporting month has been much higher vs. both previous months (3.7M tons in January and 2.85M tons in February) and March 2016 (3.6M tons).

Expectedly main driver of growth was corn, which export made more than 3.1M tons (average corn export price made USD 155/t, slightly higher vs. price in February). Despite significant decrease of Ukrainian wheat stocks, its export in March exceeded 1M tons, as for barley, its export volume made close to 200k tons. In money terms total grains export in March comprised USD 689M (vs. USD 440M tons in February).

According to Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture, since the beginning of current season and till 5th April Ukrainian companies exported 34.1M tons of grains (vs. about 31M tons in corresponding period of previous season). Wheat export made 14.7M tons, barley – 5M tons, corn – 14.3M tons.

As a reminder, in current season total Ukrainian grains output was record-high and is estimated (by different sources) in the range of 63-66M tons (vs. 60M tons in My2015/16).
