5 September 2017
According to customs statistics data in August 2017 Ukrainian sugar export made 18k tons (vs. 33k tons in August 2016 and 13.2 k tons in July 2017).
In August Ukrainian companies mainly exported goods which remained in the ports after the season and not exported before. Taking into account that current sugar stocks in Ukraine remain low, domestic price is much higher vs. global one, during last months sugar export expectedly decreased. Monthly Ukrainian sugar export dynamics since the beginning of current season looks as follows:
In total since the beginning of current season Ukrainian companies exported 770k tons of sugar for USD 379M. Astarta, Ukrprominvest and Radekhiv-Tsukor remain main exporters of Ukrainian sugar, accounting for about 70% of total volume in current season. Other notable exporters have been Teofipolskiy Sugar Plant, Cygnet, Svitanok and others.
Volume of Ukrainian sugar export in MY2017/18 remains point of uncertainty as of today. Unlike a year ago, global prices remain by 20-25% lower than domestic ones, on the other side in new season Ukrainian producers are to produce about 2M tons, while consumption is about 1.5M. It means surplus of sugar on the market to make about 0.5M tons, which will put downward pressure on local prices if export will be low.
Reportedly up to 250-300k tons of sugar is already contracted for export in new season by the leading Ukrainian producers.
