Ukrainian sugar export in December made 54k tons

8 January 2023

In total in Y2022 Ukraine exported 181k tons of sugar for the total value of $93M.

Sugar export became much more active in October, when Ukrainian companies exported more than 30k tons which was by more than 3 times higher than in September. In November it grew further up to 55kmt, then in December was stable vs. November.

Main reasons of such dynamics – quite goods sugar beets yields (at more than 50 t/ha), closing stock from previous marketing year (due to decrease of sugar consumption in Ukraine) and cancellation of custom duties for Ukrainian sugar in EU.

As a reminder, after booming Ukrainian sugar export during FYs2016-17, in following years due to decrease of world sugar prices it was subdued. Moreover because of reducing sugar beets sowing area and relatively small sugar beet yields in Y2020, Ukraine became net importer of sugar in Y2021 (when export made 25k tons, import – 165k tons).

Taking into account that in Y2022 Ukraine is to produce about 1.2-1.3M tons of sugar, in new season Ukrainian sugar export can make up to 400k tons.

The biggest sugar producers in Ukraine are Astarta, Ukrprominvest-Agro and Radekhiv-Tsukor.
