Ukraine harvested more than 27 mln tons of corn

11 March 2023

As of 9 March corn has been harvested from 96% of planned area, average yield in the current season made 6.7 t/ha.

Ukrainian farmers are finishing corn harvesting. As per Ministry of Agricuture data by 9 March harvested area made 4.045 mln ha (96% of planned area), total crop exceeded 27M tons, average yield – 6.68 t/ha.

Vs. previous year total harvested area decreased by 1.4 mln ha (-25%), average corn yield in Y2021 made 7.7 t/ha, total crop – record-high 42M tons (so in the current season total corn crop decreased by about 15 mln tons or by 36%).

By regions – the biggest corn producers in Ukraine – changes in harvested area and yields y-o-y looked as follows:

Region Area 2021, k ha Area 2022, k ha Change, k ha Yield 2021, t/ha Yield 2022, t/ha
Poltava 642.8 525.6 -117.2 6.7 8.4
Chernigiv 555.8 348.1 -207.7 9.5 7.7
Sumy 459.9 273.4 -186.5 7.3 8.0
Vinnystya 456.7 392.4 -64.3 10.0 5.8
Cherkasy 406.1 363.1 -43.0 9.0 7.3
Kyiv 357.9 329.5 -28.4 9.5 6.0
Kropyvnynskiy 353.5 331.5 -22.0 7.0 5.6
Dnipro 303.5 244.4 -59.1 5.2 3.5
Khmelnytskiy 303.1 230.4 -72.7 11.1 8.6

Others 1356 925 -431 6.4 6.3
Total 5 482 4 045 -1 437 7.7 6.7

As one can see, the biggest decrease in sown and harvested area happened in Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernigiv regions (the reason is obvious – impact of russian invasion), also quite a significant reduction was in Poltava area.

Among the leaders by yield are Ternopil (9.3 t/ha), Khmelnytskiy (8.6 t/ha) and Poltava (8.6 t/ha) regions. Comparing to previous year the biggest decrease in yield was in Vinnitsya, Khmelnytsky and Kyiv regions. In Poltava and Sumy regions yields increased.
