In March 2023 Ukrainian crude steel output increased vs. both previous month and March 2022.
After the worst performance in its entire history in the last quarter of 2022, Ukrainian metallurgy continues its gradual recovery (as far as it is possible while Ukrainian ports remain blocked).
According to the information of the Ukrmetallurgprom association, in March 2023, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises increased steel production by 103,000 tons compared to February, from 424,000 tons to 527,000 tons.
Pig iron production also increased - from 350,000 tons in the previous month to 466,000 tons.
Compared to March of last year (in which, despite the full-scale Russian invasion, some enterprises in the metallurgical sector continued to work), steel production also increased - by approximately 284,000 tons.
In total, in the first quarter of 2023, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises smelted 1.2 million tons of pig iron and 1.24 million tons of steel (in the first quarter of 2022 - 3.66 million tons, in the last quarter of 2022 - only 760 thousand tons).
As a reminder, in 2022, Ukrainian enterprises produced 6.4 million tons of pig iron and 6.26 million tons of steel (more than half - 3.2 million tons - was produced in the first two months of the year).
At the moment main Ukrainian steel and pig iron producers are Arcelor Mittal Kryviy Rig, Kametsteel (former DMK), Zaporizhsteel and Interpipe-Steel.
