In 2023, Ukraine produced 6.2 million tons of steel

10 January 2024

In 2023, Ukrainian enterprises produced 6 million tons of pig iron, 6.2 million tons of crude steel, and 5.4 million tons of rolled steel.

According to preliminary information from the Ukrmetallurgprom association, in December 2023 Ukrainian steel mills produced 520,000 tons of crude steel, which is the lowest figure since June’23 (when production at AMKR decreased due to the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP, and at Zaporizhstal - due to maintenance works).

For comparison, in December 2022, only 110,000 tons of crude steel were smelted - the lowest value in the entire history of Ukraine, the reason being the blackout of electricity due to missile attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Pig iron production in December 2023 was 557,000 tons compared to 541,000 tons in November.

In total, in 2023, total Ukrainian pig iron output made 6 million tons (-6% y-o-y), crude steel - 6.23 million tons (-0.6% y-o-y).

Ukraine steel output December 2023

Due to a full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine has (for the moment) lost the metallurgical plants in Mariupol (40% of steel production in Ukraine in 2021).

Zaporizhstal plant became the largest producer of crude steel in 2023, the volume of steel smelting of which was 2.5 million tons (with the share of 40% of the total output in Ukraine, +65% vs. Y2022, -34% vs. 2021).

Estimation of steel production at other plants: Kametstal – 1.7-1.8 million tons (+20-25% vs. 2022, but -28% vs. 2021), Arcelor Mittal Kryvyi Rih – 1-1.1 million tons (-15-20% vs. 2022 , -75% vs. 2021).
