3 September 2023
By the end of August more than 22 million tons of wheat, almost 6 million tons of barley and 4 million tons of rapeseed was harvested in Ukraine.
According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, as of August 31, more than 100% of the planned area for harvesting of winter wheat was threshed in Ukraine (which means that the actual areas were larger than planned), 4,688 million hectares were threshed, 22,142 million tons of wheat were harvested with an average yield of 4.72 t/ha.
The current year's wheat crop exceeds last year's figure by 2 million tons (last year, the harvested area was almost 5 million hectares, the average yield was 4.05 tons/ha).
The yield figure in the current season is the highest in the entire history of Ukraine (the previous record was set in 2021 – 4.59 t/ha), largely due to the Russian occupation of regions where the wheat yield was historically lower than average.
The historical dynamics of the total harvest and yield of wheat in Ukraine is shown in the following graph:
The yield dynamics by region is given in our previous review.
As for barley, as of the end of August, 1.5 million hectares were harvested, total crop made 5.8 million tons with an average yield of 3.88 tons/ha.
Ukrainian farmers also harvested a record rapeseed crop in 2023. From 1.4 million hectares, 4 million tons of this crop were harvested with a yield of 2.87 tons/ha. The yield almost does not differ from the figure of the previous year (2.89 t/ha), and is slightly lower than the record yield of 2021 - 2.95 t/ha.
Historical data on the yield and total rapeseed crop in Ukraine in recent years are shown in the following graph:
